Is fall a good time to get married in Park City?

Utah is stunning in the fall, as the aspen leaves transform into vibrant shades of orange and yellow. Winter roads remain accessible, travel expenses are lower, and wedding venues and vendors have more availability.

Where can we elope in fall?

Eloping in the natural beauty of Utah is an unforgettable experience. First, consider your wedding party and their accessibility requirements. Then, consider what kind of location you’d like, ie. an intimate forest vs. open vistas.

Whether you’re looking for a big hike or an easily accessible location, there are countless trails, lakes, reservoirs, waterfalls, vista points, and venues in the Wasatch Mountain range which can accommodate your needs.

Fortunately, nearly everywhere in Utah is still open or accessible in the fall. All 5 Utah national parks remain open all year round.

Update 2023: “Church of Dirt” location at Empire Pass is no longer available. The Church of Dirt benches and arch have been removed, but the area remains open to visitors.

When is the best time to see Aspens change color in Utah?

Fall colors begin in September and depending on weather, they can linger during November. Areas further north near Salt Lake City and Park City will peak end of September and early October. Big and little Cottonwood Canyons areas and Guardsman’s Pass are best during this timeframe.

Meanwhile, further south like Zion National Park, the fall colors will peak at the end of October.

Fall closures to consider before eloping in Park City

Park City parks can be reserved until October 15th.

Winter roads begin to close in November.

Ski resorts close lift access during the fall shoulder season as they prepare for the winter ski season.

Is it difficult to elope in Utah?

Utah is a very easy state to elope in because it does not require an appointment at the county clerk office to receive a marriage license nor does it require a waiting period. It is valid for 32 days from the day you pick it up. You will need an ordained officiant and two witnesses over the age of 18 to sign the license. A family member or friend can easily be ordained online via the Universal Life Church within minutes.

Are special use permits required to elope?

For public locations, such as national parks and forest or state run parks, there is typically a special use permit required to get married. Contact the proper authority to confirm requirements.

Keep in mind that Utah’s National Parks may take up to 4 weeks to process special use permits and state issued special use permits may take months to process.

These special use permits are necessary to reduce impact on the environment and other visitors, as well as insure that there are no conflicting events.

Special considerations when eloping

Please be mindful of shared spaces when eloping in a public space. Avoid blocking access for others. Respect the wildlife. Remain on designated trails. Leave no trace. By being respectful and unobtrusive, we can continue to enjoy the beauty of the natural environment

Latest update: August 2025. Policies may have since changed.
